LoRaWAN USA frequencies, channels and sub-bands for IoT devices

See this content in the original post

The USA LoRaWAN frequency spectrum has 64 uplink channels available (125 kHz each) (channels 0-63) starting at 902.3 MHz which increment every 200 kHz up to 914.9 MHz.

There are 8 additional uplink channels (500 kHz each) (channels 64-71) from 903 MHz which increment every 1.6 MHz up to 914.2 MHz.

For gateway to end-node device communication, there are 8 downlink channels (500 kHz each) (channels 0-7) from 923.3 MHz which increment every 600 kHz up to 927.5 MHz.

For 8 channel gateways:

  • The Things Gateway from The Things Network (TTN) also uses Sub-Band 2 for LoRaWAN communication as listed in the following link: https://www.thethingsnetwork.org/docs/lorawan/frequency-plans.html#us902-928

  • Laird Sentrius RM191 gateways will default to sub-band 2. They can be reconfigured, if required as instructed in the Channel Masking section of the RM1xx LoRa smartBASIC Extensions guide for Laird LoRaWAN gateways on page 14.

  • Multitech gateways are configured by selecting one of the 8 channel sub-bands as shown in the table, each containing eight 125kHz uplink channels and one 500kHz downlink channel.

  • LORIX One IP65 outdoor gateway can operate from -30°C to +55°C and can be found at the following link: https://www.lorixone.io/en/products

  • All 8 downlink channels should be enabled on commercially available gateways.

Gateways or LoRa application server like The Things Network, Loriot, Loraserver.io and others, govern which frequency sub-band you need to use. USA, Canada, Mexico, Brazil and Australia LoRaWAN version MeteoHelix IoT Pro micro-weather stations feature the ability to turn-on and off different uplink broadcast channels via a downlink command as shown in the following List of available downlink commands for MeteoHelix LoRaWAN weather stations.

  • BARANI DESIGN Technologies MeteoHelix weather stations default to Sub-Band 2 when reset using a magnet placed next to the filter cap.

The “All Bands” option (not selecting a sub-band) may be used if you don’t know the configuration of a gateway. This will result in a one in eight chance of the gateway connecting with an end-node device since each gateway only supports 8 out of the available 64 uplink channels in the USA LoRaWAN frequency band.

LoRaWAN™ Regional Parameters v1.1rA pdf document contains detailed descriptions of frequencies and device configurations for all LoRaWAN devices.
